Hiiro no Kakera DS – First Impressions

So I got my hands on Hiiro no Kakera for the DS. I had been forewarned that it was very text heavy, and used lots of kanji, but the stubborn person in me said, screw it! I’m going for it! Anyway yes, there are A LOT of kanji, and I must admit I find it to be a difficult read, in fact I’ve been lazy from time to time and just skipped past some of the verbage. ^^; Therefore I don’t feel I’m getting the whole story, but I feel that I am at least getting enough to enjoy myself, and that’s all that I need. So a word to the wise, if your Japanese skills are minimal, you should probably go find a ROM and give it a sample to see if you can handle it before you plunk down a hefty wad of cash on it. I’ll post some links at the end of this post to a couple handy online Japanese dictionaries that I have found helpful as I play though.

I haven’t really played too far into the game, or at least I think I haven’t. It’s only about my third day or so I think, but so far I am enjoying it. I’ve met Takuma, Mahiro, Yuuichi, and Suguru. I have to admit that I do like all of their characters even though I don’t usually go for Mahiro or Suguru’s type. I guess that must say something good about the writers if they can make me interested in character types I don’t favor. I really hope the last couple that I meet are also as interestin’ and purdy as the rest because then we might have a win-win harem, and I may just play through each guy’s story. X3 Hehe, actually from the box art I can tell that they are pretty, but interesting is another matter, lol.

The artwork is also really beautiful in this game and I love that it’s set in the fall. It’s also nice and convenient that it is fall now where I live, so I think that adds to the enjoyment a little more. I only wish now that the DS’s screens were larger! So far the voice acting is good too. There have been times where a character’s voice could turn me off, but even Mahiro’s over exhuberance doesn’t bother me. Of course I still have two more guys to meet so we’ll see. If one of them has a cutey pansy voice I’ll barf. XD

I have come upon one mini game so far, and I have to admit I enjoyed it more than I liked the mini games in Tokimemo First Kiss (which I think are hard mind you). The hot pot game is great fun, and I played it several times before I tired of it. If you don’t know already, you will have a pot of food at the ready on the touch screen and above will be the guy’s heads. They will each get a talk bubble of the type of food that want, and you have to just poke at the food in the right order to get it to bounce over to the little plate. When they get the food that they want and in the order they want, they will be happy and show hearts above their heads, but if you have the food they want but you screw up the order you will get musical notes. Hearts of course get you more points than musical notes. I’m not sure if speed is a factor, I used to think it was but now I’m not so sure. Anyway if you give them the wrong food they will be angry and get a stress mark above their head. You are also timed and you have the option to switch out your plate of food whenever you like. It is good times and reminded me a little of Cooking Mama, although you don’t really prepare anything. Unfortunately I ran into some trouble because it appears there may be a small patch of my DS screen that is not as sensitive as it used to be, so sometimes when I would go to grab a piece of food, it just wouldn’t budge! XP It was very vexing, though I learned to just switch out my plate if the piece of food I needed was in that area.

So those are my first thoughts on Hiiro no Kakera. I’ll more than likely be posting about it again shortly as I’ve taken a couple screenies and thought I might post a little bit of helper info for a couple of things. For now though here are some helpful or awesome links:

It’s in Japan only, so you have to import and play the Japanese version or find a ROM. As far as I know, nobody has done full translations.
